April 26, 2011 - Final Kirtan Circle - Ubud, Bali
Tomorrow night is the final gathering with Kim and Kevin. Here is an excerpt from  my latest piece over on Yogi Tunes. These gatherings have been super special and I am honored to be able to share the thoughts, offerings, hearts and intentions with you all of these two beautiful souls. There is a lot behind, underneath and around the intention for us all to come together and sing. Please be sure to express your appreciation for their gracious offerings of holding the space, the time, the food, the experience, the water, the effort placed in the candles, the flowers, the offerings, the fire puja, the beautiful moon lit rays, the incredible house, the gifts of the musicians and the voices of each other, the fairy tale like stroll down to the bathroom, the gorgeous view, the elated high and most importantly, THE FUN! The fun, the fun, the fun! We get to all share this experience together. If you have received any amount of anything within these circles, please remember to say thank you. Make sure you take a moment to express your gratitude. Love and gratitude will never be overlooked and is always deeply appreciated. OM SHANTI!

You know those moments in life when you meet those people who just touch you… in a deep, uncharted space inside.. A space that not many are able to access and brush their fingertips upon. They are Ones who has walked just as far along. Ones who know and see. Precious gemstone radiant eyed creatures that one day, just waltz right on into your life.

Meet my new friends. Kevin and Kim. Better known as Kevin James Carroll and Kim Kandinsky. Kevin is a musician and kirtan leader throughout Asia and the South Pacific, Kim is a beaming ray of light in a man’s body. They’ve just been added to my list of favorite people. In full devotion to their own hearts and the hearts of others.

As a recent addition to the Bali community, I have just met these two wonderous beings. Kevin and Kim have been leading kirtan circles at their private residence once a week for the community to come together and sing. No charge, no rules, no nothin. Just shoes off at the front door and donation bowl by offering. Some nights it’s been as many as 300 people.

I got to sit down with them the other day and have a little chit chat. Here’s a little melody of how our conversation sang…

I started to play a note and it just sung to me…I’m just being funneled by God… not too much responsibility for my life of what I do. I just follow my heart before worldly ambition. That seems to be the choice that I make when I’m struck at a cross roads. It puts me back on track. My path has been pretty steady and refines itself as I get older..

The inner pull is the connection I have with my heart, I bow to that first. I can give up petty desires to the will of the heart. The less I follow it the more suffering I encounter, I suppose. I’m aware and I’m courageous enough to have the faith even though the rewards are not immediate. I don’t separate my path, my elightenment, my seva, my mission on Earth to my desire to free myself as well as others…

Why through song? You can only ask God that question. I’m not just here to chant. That could change tomorrow. I’m coming out of ten years from separation from society. Unplugged. I was about to get really big but there was something not ripe inside of me. I had to grow into it and cultivate whatever it was within some more.

I go where I’m needed the most. If enough people are asking me to come it’s probably where I’ll go. It’s all organic, there’s no method. It’s all synchronicity and love. If I can see that it’s really helping them, that’s when I go. I don’t really follow method, it’s not really the Truth. The heart is the Guide. The heart is the definite yes or no to know.

I get a tingley feeling—it’s a good feeling that’s not a rational thought beyond reason. If I’m at an intersection, I go the route that feels better. You take the perfection wherever you go. I have an inner knowing that I can’t do the wrong thing. One can follow neurotic thoughts or follow the heart, the intelligence to life all around us. It’s a fluid thing… everyday…

I am being taught. I unfold a different chapter everyday. I will use anything around me to strengthen my inner connection. I can be inspired by this view. I can just be on the balcony and be present, just be completely immersed in the moment and allow spontaneous consciousness to arise. Notice everything around me, the smell, the sounds, the details.

Our relationship… I love Kim because he can do things that I can’t do. But when we come together, we are so powerful.

I’m in love with the music. The energy that comes through me while we sing… we realize that together we can do more of what we want to do in this world. Not a single moment of conflict between us.

Ultimately, the purpose: Find my heart. Find my highest of High. What a sacred journey to awaken here. Love. Love is so ambitious, so present, so real, so profound. A man made of salt, searching for the sea. That’s my path. The love inside of me. The more I so that the more I dissolve into love. It seems to be a process. I’m not afraid of that. I don’t know if it always will be. I’m life a river that is getting stronger and stronger… other people coming.. raging river… there is an excitement… no one wants to leave. A state of complete stillness, completeness, wholeness, connectedness. And I share that with everyone in the room.

And that is pricesless. In my opinion, I feel like I am sharing with people the most precious gift— better than anything material. For some it’s a glimpse, a taste, a state that may even last for days… and then we step back into the world of disconnectedness / separateness…

What we do here is create an island for them to come and rest. To remember the Truth of their Being. The Truth of themselves. We’re not offering salvation. There’s healing that happens, for sure. It’s really just about everyone’s own experience.

Why do I do it? CUZ I LOVE IT! There’s nothing I love more! It’s my passion. I really do it for myself. The more I love myself the more I can share my love with everyone else.

Direct experience, pure channeling with this light. We invite these people to come here and they’re having a direct experience with their own Divinity. No dogma, no religion, no guru. It doesn’t interfere with anything, it doesn’t impose.

Spirituality has been way too marketed. Look what it is over there. I’m experimenting with— the more divine the space, the fire, the food, the offering… and expect nothing in return. People can walk into this space and have this and no one’s asking them for anything.

People have said “it was like I was in the desert… I went straight back into the divine… ecstatic, expanded, grounded, open..

WE CAN GET SO FU*KING HIGH WITH THIS. All of that sh*tty suffering will just fall away. It won’t last.

People are having experiences from chanting similar to Ayahuasca or DMT. All we’re doing is giving people permission to be themselves and follow their hearts. There’s no activism, pushing, violence. None of that works.

They cannot compete with this expression of Love. Accept it, allow it, just create what you want and make it so beautiful that everyone wants to be a part of it.

With this, we’re giving people simple, melodic, structure, but you sing the song together from the getgo, everyone finds their way in. there might be different harmonies, sometimes even different words… it’s evolved kirtan. It’s evolved into something even more free. Kevin’s leading it, but you’re the one who’s being led.

Someone said to me the other night, “I felt included.”

That’s music to my ears. We tell the musicians to have a night off and sing with us. Let’s sing together. We’re refining a context of what we know works. Everyone’s feeling that expansive loving community.

It’s a loving loving loving LOVE exercise. The key word is connection.

Through the singing, we connect. The disconnection of society, distructive behavior of themselves, to the world, or even worse to each other… Being connected to a bigger picture that’s not just driven for a separate self. We’re working from a whole. The separation journey is coming to an end. And with all of that is happening in the world, at least we’re having a good time! It’s blissful. It’s definitely not serious.

It’s wild. It’s also free, respectful and orderly. It’s everything. The light. Divinity. It’s a very pure expression of it. It’s sound. There are words involved. Om. Allah. Shiva. Simple chorus. Vibration. Tapping into the Source of Light is a HIGH.

Doing this together to drop into the light. The Earth feels it. We’re rippling it out. We know it’s having an effect. We can see it. We’re surrounded, bombarded by the fearful aspects of out nature—it’s actually a lie. We become a generator for the light.

The circle means equality. There is much emphasis being part of the circle.  The candles, the flowers, the cushions… it’s all a part of the circle.

DIVINITY. This bliss and this light is YOU. We are the expression of the Source. We are the light. Kevin’s channeling it for himself. I’m just being myself and having a great time. It’s coming from inside of me. I am the light. I am the beginning and middle road and there is no end.. there is no fear. Whoever would have thought we could have achieved this just by singing together in a circle?  But it seems to be true.

The whole world is reverent and irreverent. You cannot have one without the other. You cannot have deep and profound without humor. Yin yang principle. profound teacher of the way of things. There’s always a circle. Drum. Indigenous tribes— the form is universal, it’s timeless. We’ve always been doing it, we just forgot.

People are remembering something that’s in their DNA. There are ways to wake it up and we’re finguring it out. The more we do it, the more we celebarate it.

What’s exciting about it is, we can’t go back to the old once the new has awakened. Now: it’s universal, a little bit of this, a little bit of that—there’s not dogma, no sepateness, it’s Sufi, it’s Muslim, it’s Hallelujah, it’s Christian, it’s Buddha, there is no limitation. One Tribe, One Humanity, One Religion.

It’s not based on beliefs. It’s about internalizing God now. Looking in. We’ve been trapped in a divided consciousness for too long. WHOLENESS. GOD. TRUTH. As seen as part of OURSELVES.

THIS is the new religion. LOVE. Love is the new religion.

Kim and the the Dalai Lama…
“Is it possible that I could have incarnated as a dolphin in a man’s body?”

And the Dalai Lama replies…
“Of course! I am a butterfly in a man’s body!”

Om Shanti my beautiful friends. I would love to delve deeper into the yogic teachings, but as I am currently living in Bali with no credit card, I am unable to purchase reading material on Amazon. From the generosity and love in your heart, if you feel you have the means to help a sister out with my pursuit of these texts, this will aide immensely in my excavation as a student, so I may better serve you as a teacher. Thank you and may your journey be filled with love.

On projections

I’ve written many times on this topic, but it seems to be something that needs to be vocalized and discussed. Life is always the master of inspiration. This is a personal plea for you to please, look in.

Look in the mirror. Look at yourself. Look in, look in, look in. Close your eyes. Look in, look in, look in.

My friend who has lived here in Bali for the past eight years or so told me that when the terrorist bombs happened here a few years back, the entire island came together and asked themselves the questions, “what did we do for this to happen?” “how did we create this?” “what have we done to attract this and what do we need to do now to heal and transform it?” It goes to show you the paradigm of their minds. Very different from the western world— where the emphasis of blame and fault is projected out vs. finding the cause and root within. I’m sharing this story with you so you have some perspective.

When you have the power within yourself to fulfill your own needs or ask the universe for help, it will come in via another source- not in a limited way of a fragmented reality. Stop projecting rubbish onto innocent bystanders. And by rubbish I mean all your unhealed past experiences that you may be bringing into the current moment.

Nobody likes to be hit with a ball of mud. It doesn’t feel good. It feels dirty. We’ve all got our own mud to deal with. Own your muddy projections and watch them shift. Do the work and the bowl of water will then become clear. In other words, own your shit. Please. Nobody’s going to wipe your butt for you. You’re not five years old anymore. You’re an adult now.

Maybe thats too real and diffiult to digest. I can say it in another way if you want me to.

I talk about these things cos well, it needs to be said. This was once a foreign concept to me too. Humans tend to sweep these topics under the rug, get embarrassed, shy away. Time to get over it. Do the work. Your soul is trying to wake up while your ego is throwing a hissy fit.

By no means am I saying I’m perfect. I’m human. I screw up. I have projections too. But I catch them when they come out. I know they’re mine- places within me that have yet to be healed that are surfacing for me to shed some truth and light onto the darkened less enlightened areas of me. All opportunities for growth and TRUTH. You have to be willing to change.

It’s ok. We’ve all got them. But we’re doing the work aren’t we, to clear the blockages of all that may be in the way. If I’ve ruffled your feathers or you’ve felt an internal heat arise within you while reading this, that’s a sign of your own projection. HEAL THAT. FAST. Cos it’s getting in the way of you being fully present in life and having real and authentic relationships with yourself and with the world. If you’re unphased than I haven’t triggered you.

Never waste a good trigger. I think Sean Corne said that. Triggers are meant to be opportunities for you to look within yourself and ask, Why do I feel this way? Why has this situation been created that made me lose my cool? My peace? My calm? My center? My ground? What is this external circumstance saying about my internal domain?

Own your projections. It’s not fair to you, the person or thing you’re throwing it at or even to the space around you. It doesn’t do any good, it only causes harm. The faster you own them, the faster they shift. It’s like Einstein said, No problem can be solved at the same level of consciousness it was created.

Own it, move it, transform it and ELEVATE YOUR AWARENESS. People will support you. But only if you step up and do the work. Nobody but you can do the untangling for you. OWN YOUR SHIT.

Shanti Shanti.

Since receiving a blood ozone treatment for the condition I had going for my heart, my life has changed…dramatically. If you’re not up to date, you can read it on Elephant Journal called “Healing the Heart” here. Sometimes the most subtlest of shifts can be the most profound. My heart has finally been able to calm down, literally. My body is finally able to chill out and not work so hard to pump my blood and receive it through my veins. My mind has finally reached a deeper level of peace. And I thought I was in a state of stillness before with an overactive heart—that goes to show you there is no limit to deepening one’s relation to peace. I love healing …

I saw Sabar the other day. Remember him? I wrote about him in one of my offerings for MindBodyGreen. He’s helping me find a new house.

I never see you around, he said.

I’m in Ubud, I’m here. I’m around.

Yes, we are here. Smiles.

Look for a white helmet next time.

*Looks at helmet* Ahh, SHANTI.

Shanti Shanti.

Damai Dami.

What’s Damai?

It means Shanti in Bahasa.

Ahh, Damai Damai. Shanti Shanti.

*Together* Damai Damai Shanti Shanti Peace Peace.

Two smiles meet.

End scene.

Now the key to all of this is, is the more experienced you get, as I said, the more trust you have. And you don’t have trust in your own capacity to do all this stuff, you have trust in the capacity for it to be done. So you’re just opening. Cos really it’s the light of consciousness that does most of the work. Right? It’s the light of consciousness.

Cos All that light is doing is shining itself, darkness is attracted to the light as well as light is attracted to the light. Just like moths to a flame. That’s the kind of the principle. That’s why when you have these great openings you’ll often have later moments of darkness. It’s just like moths going towards the flame. Everything wants to be liberated. Everything. And guess what everything moves towards? YOU.

Cos you are that light of being. The brighter you get, the more the dark goes, ‘Whoopee! I’ve been lookin’ for a bright light!’ at some point you stop resisting that and you have a great trust. And like I said, the trust isn’t a personal trust. In fact the deeper you go, the more you throw out the personal part of it, the trust is in that unfathomable intelligence and love that is. That is the structure of all existence. You become more and more open to it. You trust it more and more and more. So you stop getting in the way of it.

So this realm of Spirit is really the realm of Oneness. Pure spirit still has duality in it. Pure formless spirit has this duality. There’s pure formlessness and then world of form. But the deeper, mature realization of that is spirit is form and form is spirit. Or as it says in the heart sutra, form is emptiness; emptiness is form.

When the Buddhists say emptiness it’s much more like what a Christian would mean by spirit. It’s not all they mean by it, but it’s much closer to our notion of spirit than it is to our notion of an empty box. It’s not that kind of emptiness. It’s empty in the sense of No form, but a great presence and love and it’s a divinity

When that really matures, even the archetypal things that are releasing, and literally yin a certain sense they use you to release themselves, even things that don’t have anything to do with you will use you to release themselves. After that sort of process starts to calm down, there’s a distinct, very palpable, very deep sense of immovability.

And so its this will towards truth, its this curiosity about truth it’s this love of what’s true and what’s real is that what i’m calling the spiritual orientation. And when this starts to become alive in you, then you’ve begun the journey. You’ve really begun to ask the central questions.

You’re finally oriented in the direction of reality. You’re no longer oriented in the direction of fantasy. Which so much of spirituality is about fantasy. It’s about just spiritual ideas; it’s about spiritual belief systems. There’s an extraordinary amount of fantasy in spirituality and also in religion.

And so its really important that to notice that this desire or will towards truth, towards reality it’s not just something abstract. Because you know, someone that’s real intellectually oriented they’ll think about this in their mind and it’ll be a very abstract thing. What’s truth? and they’ll be thinking about it and it’ll be like a philosophy or a theology or some idea.

Where as somebody who is more emotionally based they’ll be looking to find what’s truth based on how they feel. Which is a terrible way to find truth. Cos we can feel really good, temporarily anyway, about things that are very untrue.

Delusions often have an element in them that feel very good, very satisfying. They’re not ultimately satisfying, but they have a component that can feel very very good that can feel very seductive. Seductive. Now you cant make the desire for truth into a formula. We often want to make things into a formula. Give me the 5-part plan towards spiritual awakening. Give me the formula, then I can just follow the formula, and if I follow it just right, I’ll end up enlightened.

But the desire for truth what’s inherent within it is that’s There is no formula. A formula comes from the known. It Literally is an expression of what we think we know, whatever formula I come up with

As strange as this may sound, truth is not based in the known. Truth is an outreaching into the unknown. Truth is that which gets you to reach out beyond what you think you know, beyond what you imagine you know into the unknown. Truth is that which will question itself. So truth, the desire for truth, the love of truth that which will get you to question yourself.

It can be really useful just to spend some time with, as I often ask people what is this about for you? Why re you here? What ate you doing here? What’s this all about? What this whole spiritual thing about for you? What’s this really about?

“Tell me what you think it means.. One love, One heart.”

Martha Graham

“There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time. This expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium; and be lost. The world will not have it.

It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open.

No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.”

The Power of MUSIC

Love by John Lennon is on,

I take a moment to gaze over my right shoulder

I see a bird fly by.

A bird I’ve never seen before.

This morning’s practice was sweet.

It was slow,

slow like dripping nectar.

My body feels unfamiliar today,

my eyelids heavy and thick.

I lay with the sun

and ask the Heavens above,

please heal me,

help me heal.

Heal all beings and the Earth.

Remove this suffering,

remove all that is in the way.

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley is next.

His voice always seem

to ignite a feeling of hope within me,

at moments when I need it most.

He has that quality to him.

Light always prevails.

And it ends with Van Morrison,

Astral Weeks.

What better way

TO UPLIFT?

Peace Peace Peace.

Shanti Shanti Shanti.
